Interviews
Getting to Know our Network Administrators

Interview Responses; Eric Burke of FreeSharing.org
"There are support groups where moderators can assist each other, and the new group submission process is simple: If its a free recycling group, it's added to the directory. Because FreeSharing.org is such a streamlined and self regulating system, I predict it will continue to grow at a rapid rate in the future, and believe that we are just one good press release from breaking out into the main stream." -- Eric Burke

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How does freecycling work on a local level?
This is a good guide to what freecycling's about for the new comer. Though you must look a bit to find a few of our "alternative" networks, we're glad to find mention of our large and growing impact in the green community.

What adjective best describes the networks TGU represents. Alternative?
TGU especially likes the adjectives "grassroots", "independent" or even "original style".
For example, "Independent freecycling does not view its groups as franchises. Rather, original style networks preseve the grassroots integrety and community ownership of local freecyling groups."

But mostly our administrators are not picky about adjectives. They're just real proud to see more folks joining the local groups they care about because you let the world know original style freecycling's still here.

Why are your networks separate from TFN at freecycle.com?
This article gives a unbiased account of the reasons.
Our 5 Star Networks link to Yahoo! Group owners/moderators and community members who embrace the original freecycling ideal. Many left TFN in dissent with one or more of these deflections from that original grassroots concept:
Corporate Sponsorship, Use of Funds, Trademark, Centralization, Removed groups, Dismissing dissenters.

TGU Press Releases

Launch of Online Freecycling Web Portal, Aug.8, 2008
Spring Press Release Feb 10, 2009

Trademark Information.

Clarifying legal questions about using the word "freecycle".
Open Letter from Tim Oey to SunnyvaleFree
(June 11, 2008) "In September 2007, as an outcome of the Arizona suit, a Ninth Circuit decision established that using the word freecycle generically is not trademark infringement, that saying freecycle is generic is not trademark infringement, and that encouraging others to use the word freecycle generically is not trademark infringement. TFN did not appeal this decision so it stands."-- Tim Oey

In this open letter to his Sunnyvale group, Tim Oey sums up the main issues as they have unfolded in court and announces the court's restoration of the FreecycleSunnyvale name.
